Barkin Up the Right Tree

In which we drool all over the smoking hot Ellen Barkin, as Helen Cruger, in Sea of Love.

Ellen Barkin in Sea of Love is a mood, if ever there was one. The 1989 erotic-romantic thriller is a favorite of mine that’s always rewarding to revisit, and Barkin’s pure-sex-on-two-legs performance as a seductive femme fatale is a big reason why.

Special thanks to the wardrobe department for making Barkin squeeze her lithe, sexy frame into the tightest skirts and dresses imaginable, and to director Harold Becker for repeatedly filming her bending over and squatting down in those impossibly tight skirts and dresses.

She is repeatedly, extensively, and especially for diehard fans of Ms. Barkin gloriously objectified by the lens in almost every scene. If you have a thang for the always-arousing Ellen, and for sultry femme fatales, then Sea of Love is the film for you. Oh for sure do I love the film’s gritty 1989 New York vibe; Al Pacino’s fantastic, hangdog alcoholic cop performance; and Pacino’s sensational buddy cop chemistry with John Goodman, but, not gonna lie, I love me some Ellen Barkin in short, tight skirts, too—and who doesn’t love when she’s completely buck nekkid, which happens in this film? Basically, beyond being a terrific erotic modern noir, Sea of Love will also forever serve as a shrine for worshipping the smoking hot Ellen Barkin.
