The Gothic Horror Art of Bruce Timm

Artist, animator, writer, producer, and director: Bruce Timm has been an integral creative force across popular culture for decades now. He’s worked in comic books and television, primarily, and is probably best known for co-creating the landmark program Batman: The Animated Series, and his art style has been integral to DC Comics’ animated branding for much of the last thirty-odd years. The man is an absolute legend. He’s also one of my personal favorite artists, one who has continually inspired me in my own art.

Timm’s likenesses of Hammer stats Caroline Munro, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and others still retain his signature style. This piece is absolutely stunning.

While Timm is most linked to Batman and other DC properties in many people’s minds, he’s also created a tremendous amount of horror art over his career. Clearly influenced by, and a fan of, the classic Hammer Horror Films—and even illustrating his own Hammer art, like the poster style work above for Dracula A.D. 1972—Timm’s horror art is filled with half-naked beauties being tormented by bloodthirsty vampires, ferocious beasts, and rotting undead zombies. It hits all the horror fan sweet spots, and if you grew up on Hammer Horror and the Golden Age of mass market paperback horror fiction, this gallery of Timm’s work will be right up your alley.

Timm’s take on Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers. Gorgeous!
Typical men, fighting over a scantily clad, unconscious babe.
I need this hanging in my house.
