Favorite Film Posters: Tequila Sunrise

Celebrating my favorite film posters.

Robert Townes’s 1988 neo-noir crime drama Tequila Sunrise is one of my favorite Michelle Pfeiffer films. With a killer cast—Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson, Raoul Julia—exquisite, Oscar-nominated cinematography from Conrad Hall, and a memorable musical score by Dave Grusin, the Southern California-set Tequila Sunrise is a film that rewards repeat viewings. The world of the film is one I want to revisit, frequently.

My love of the film likely informs my love for its poster. Even if I’d never seen the film, though, I’d still be attracted to the layout and design of this poster, which beautifully recreates the signature gradations of the cocktail for which the film is named. When I found a T-shirt with this poster on it, years ago, I scooped it up, and wear it proudly to this day. The film’s romantic trio of Michelle, Mel, and Kurt look like the outrageously beautiful people we know them to be, and the red-orange skies in the background make me thirsty for a Tequila Sunrise. I think I’ll go mix one up right now.
