Hot Shots of the Week: Barbarella’s Excess and Ecstasy

Barbarella (1968) is one of the best, and most campy, cult gems ever made, and I love it unreasonably and unconditionally. In a film full of memorably hot scenes, one of the hottest comes when Barbarella is trapped by Durand-Durand in his deadly “Excessive Machine.” Through controls operated by Durand-Durand, the machine strips Barbarella of her clothes, then proceeds to stimulate her into a state of agony and ecstasy intended to kill her at the moment of peak orgasm.

Well, Barbarella is too much woman for any technology to handle. She breaks the machine while reaching an epic climax. Jane Fonda plays it masterfully, beautifully blending Barbarella’s naive innocence and her positively explosive feminine sexuality.

“It’s sort of nice, isn’t it?” Yes, Barbarella, it’s very nice, indeed.
