Reading is Fundamental

It’s National Read Across America Day! Also known as Dr. Seuss’s birthday. A friend and neighbor handed down her sons’ Seuss books to me when I was just a toddler and I adored those stories, and especially because my mother read them to me and used different voices for different characters. So, along with comic books, I suppose Dr. Seuss played a role in my learning to read. Not only did I take to reading early, but I’ve continued to read like a maniac ever since. Books, articles, essays, blog posts, you name it. I have several books going at one time—ADHD at work, folks!—and always need to travel with at least a few, just in case I find a brief moment here and there to read.

She’s reading smut, isn’t she? Good for her!

I subscribe to the adage that, in order to be a good writer you need to read—and read, and read, and read, as far and as widely as you can. But that’s only part of why I read; the main reason is because it brings me joy. I go through stretches sometimes where my stress levels make it hard to concentrate on reading, but I always bounce back and begin plowing through the stacks of unread books again. And, oh my lord, those stacks are intimidating! I persevere, though.

Speaking of stacks…

In honor of National Read Across America Day, here are some photos of readers doing their thing, and proving that reading is more than just fundamental, it’s also incredibly sexy.

Especially when you do it in lingerie.…

We’re trying to appreciate that awesome vintage cover art, but those legs and heels are making it awfully tough to look elsewhere.

…or barely any items of clothing at all.

There are no words. Okay, maybe one: WOW.
There’s nothing quite like being engrossed in a good book.
The sexiest reader and book lover of all time, Marilyn Monroe. I could and should do an entire post about Marilyn and her love of reading.
Paul Newman proving why only he could’ve played Cool Hand Luke.
Consider this lingerie-clad temptress the physical manifestation of the distractions that get in the way of reading. If only all distractions looked this good.
Holy magnified small print, Batman! Roddy McDowall as the Bookworm and Francine York as Lydia Limpit in Batman (1966).
This lovely woman appears to have absolutely nailed the sexy librarian fantasy look, doncha think?
Harrison Ford looking hunky with a book will make any reader smile.
This sultry reader dressed appropriately to spend the day lounging in an erotic manner in the erotic fiction section.
Parker Posey didn’t do much reading in the terrific ‘90s indie movie Party Girl, but she gave good sexy librarian, so we’ll allow it.
Browsing for more than just books…

  1. Michael, I love your displays of eye-candy as always 🙂 I also love it that you included Marilyn Monroe in this 🙂 She was always smart, sexy and talented – a perfect combination 🙂 In fact, I sincerely believe that her I.Q. was higher than mine and yours combined (or at the very least, just mine) 🙂 Speaking of which, will you be doing a birthday post of hers this June? I ask because June 1st is her birthday, but you probably knew that already 🙂 I did one last year, but I on her 98th birthday (what would have been at least) I will do a blog entry with a link to the one I did last year because that one is hard for me to top concerning my own posts 🙂
