Michelle Monday

I borrowed the screenshots below from my pal Paul’s blog. A while back he posted them in celebration of a memorable scene from one of my favorite hidden gem Michelle Pfeiffer pfilms, I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007).

Television writer Rosie (Pfeiffer) is stuck next to two condescending and judgmental studio executives while waiting for her boss at the network. The two men are viciously picking apart the physical aspects of various actresses, including Meg Ryan and Kim Basinger. As she listens in silence, steam practically starts shooting out of Rosie’s ears. Finally, she verbally blasts them up one side and down the other for discussing these actresses in such a degrading manner. In a film full of wonderful comedic moments for Michelle, this is one of the funniest. It’s a brief scene—one that really shows off Michelle’s legendary legs, too—but it continues a key theme running through Amy Heckerling’s underrated rom-com: society makes aging feel like a crime. In Rosie’s case, this is doubly difficult to deal with because she works in Hollywood, where the pressure to stay young and fit is enormous.

Michelle was in her late forties when she filmed I Could Never Be Your Woman, so the movie’s themes must have resonated with her. Of course, she’s an exquisitely beautiful woman who looks flawless in this movie, but I’m sure frustrations with ageism—especially for women—can be felt by even the most beautiful woman in the world.
