“I love the way you swig.”
That’s what Johnny (Al Pacino) says to Frankie (Michelle Pfeiffer) in one of my favorite scenes from my favorite movie, Frankie and Johnny. It happens during a raucous party in a New York apartment , as the two characters tentatively stoke the flames of their budding romance. Frankie, of course, is always in defense mode, so she scoffs at Johnny swooning over how she swigs beer, but you can tell she’s beginning to let herself fall for this amusingly persistent paramour.

Not onot does Frankie swig from a bottle with gusto, she also nibbled nervously on her disposable coffee cup.

Both actions are endearing, and just the sort of character quirks that make Michelle’s performance so masterfully well-rounded and emotionally impactful. No wonder it’s my favorite role of hers.

The idea of Michelle working in a greasy spoon diner in just too great a leap for me. “White Palace”, on the other hand is much more believable.
