Is This Thing On?

Ever feel a bit like Susie Diamond the first time she takes the stage with the Fabulous Baker Boys? You know, when she forgets to flip the switch on the microphone and no one in the audience hears her—until she turns on the mic just as she answers Frank Baker in frustration, “What fucking switch?!

Well, that sums up how I feel around here lately. I’ve been doing that thing you should never do as a blogger: obsessing over pitiful page views and visits. Sometimes I’m not sure if anyone is listening, at least not until I drop an F bomb.

Even though it’s frustrating, these fluctuating stats are all part of running a blog; it ebbs and flows over time. I know this. Still, I have my annual, or biannual freakout moment, where I get a little too inside my own head and worry if anyone’s out there anymore, laying eyes on the stuff I post here. Then I try to shake it off because, ultimately, that’s a fruitless path to take. Better to appreciate those who are reading than fret over those who are not.

A quick, related aside: just know that I notice all of you who comment, like, or otherwise show up to support this tiny little Lounge-that-could. It means everything to me, so I sincerely thank you for always stopping by and being supportive.

Instead of wallowing in meaningless data, I’ve been focusing lately on trying to comment more on some of your wonderful blogs. The WordPress Reader feature, which I’ve relied on heavily for years now, seems to be defective lately. Another blogger I know agrees, and we both lamented missing loads of posts, seemingly because the Reader never put them in our feeds. So, I’m trying to remember to stop by and visit sites I love, but I want to get better at leaving more comments! It’s always fun to join in conversation with the writers I love here on WordPress.

Okay, so this was a bit rambling, but you catch my drift, right? I’d hate to be singing out into the void, with no one hearing me, so here’s hoping the mic is switched on and you dig what I’m serving up.

Now, let’s kick back and bask in the beauty and the glory that is Susie Diamond, doing her thang onstage, as only she can. After a rough spot, the startling sexy Susie picked herself up, regained her composure, and belted out a crowd pleaser. She always manages to inspire me to try and do the same, each time out.

    1. That really means the world to me to hear. Thank you so much, my friend. Your writing has become essential reading for me. If you keep on keepin’ on, I will as well.

  1. I know exactly how you feel my pfriend. I felt the same about the response to our most recent dual review. I should know better really. I’ve been around the blogging world long enough to know how things work.
I’ve often found the best writers get the least response, basically because they don’t have the time or the inclination to play the blogging game. You’ll always be number 1 in my eyes. Long live The Starfire Lounge!

    1. Thank you, my pfriend. You’re my number one, and your blog has inspired me since the beginning. It’s tough to look at minuscule stats and not want to throw in the towel, but ultimately we do this because we love it and, in all honesty, we need to do it.
