A while back, we invited Bettie Page to the stage for Fishnet Friday and to say she brought down the house is an understatement. if anyone else could equal the Queen of Pinups it’s The Blonde Bombshell herself, American icon Marilyn Monroe. From rocking the ‘nets alongside leggy pal Jane Russell in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), or as a saloon singer in River of No Return (1954), or in several memorable photo shoots, Marilyn probably did more to popularize this style of tights than most anyone else in the twentieth century.
In honor of making it through another work week—we might be crawling into the weekend, but dammit we made it!—Lounge VIP Marilyn Monroe is here to celebrate with her inimitable take on Fishnet Friday. What follows is a heaping helping of Marilyn’s finest fishnet photos.

The photo above, and the one that follows below, were taken by one of Marilyns’s best visual chroniclers, Milton Greene. Like so many of Marilyn’s photos, these are simultaneously sweet and supercharged with eroticism. Not only is she flashing nearly the entirety of her legs, but those legendary stems are encased in seamed fishnets that poke through sexy black open-toed heels. It’s unbelievable that a human being could radiate this much sex appeal, but Marilyn did it every time she stood in front of a camera.

In this series of burlesque-style shots, Marilyn radiates sensuality.

This next photo is especially stunning, as the guitar mirrors Marilyn’s hourglass figure.

In these publicity shots for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn’s friend and partner-in-mischief Jane Russell joins her for a truly scorching hot moment of fantastic fishnet double trouble. That was a mouthful, but just look at these two!! They deserve all the adjectives.

In March 1955, Marilyn rode a pink (!) elephant out to a rousing standing ovation during the Arthritis & Rheumatism charity event for Ringling Bros. Circus at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Looking resplendent in her big top burlesque outfit, Marilyn drove the crowd into a frenzy when she appeared, as multiple accounts reported at the time.

The photo below was taken backstage at the Arthritis & Rheumatism event. Thanks to the neat mirror effect, Marilyn and her fishnet-clad gams appear to be multiplying exponentially for infinity—my god, I want to live in that cosmic plane of existence!

As a dance hall singer in River of No Return, Marilyn brings down the house.

For Bus Stop (1956), Marilyn posed for a series of provocative pictures in which her fishnet-coveted legs were front and center.

One more before you leave: Marilyn’s eternal beauty and intimacy with the camera are on full display in this photograph by J. R. Eyerman from 1949.

Great photos of the iconic Marilyn Monroe 🙂 I love all of Marilyn Monroe’s films, but my number one favorite is Howard Hawks 1953 musical comedy masterpiece Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 🙂 As you and I know, it features Marilyn’s most iconic number, which is Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, which has also been highly influential among many female singing artists 🙂 The chemistry between Monroe and Jane Russell (who I also love) is magical like the film itself 🙂 What made Marilyn Monroe’s Lorelei Lee so enduring is that she was in on the joke the entire time – Click on this youtube video link below to get what I am saying 🙂
Interested to always hear what you think 🙂
