The various national/international “holidays” seem to have proliferated out of control in the internet age. When you find out there’s a National Toilet Paper Day in August and a National Split Pea Soup Week every November, it’s hard not to feel the end times are near.

Still, some of these silly celebratory days, weeks, or months are worth noting. For example: National Legwear Day, which falls annually on September 22. As the website Holidays Calendar notes, “leggings, stockings, garters, pantyhose, RHT stockings, hold-ups, legskin, and a variety of other hosiery products. Some of them are worn underneath the clothing, and others can be worn as a fashion accessory.”
What makes this day so notable here at the Lounge, though? Well, obviously it’s because of the Queen of legwear herself, Ms. Bettie Mae Page. Has anyone ever donned stockings, garter belts, thigh highs, or fishnets better than Bettie? The answer is obviously, “No.”

National Legwear Day feels like the right time for Bettie’s return to the Lounge. After being one of the headliners here for nearly a year—leading up to her 100th birthday extravaganza in April—she’s had a much-deserved rest these last few months. Well, look out, because she’s back, and with a vengeance.

Bettie and her legendary legs lit up the Lounge previously for Thigh High Thursday and Fishnet Friday, among other posts, so consider National Legwear Day a continuation of her global hosiery dominance. Not to sound like a broken record, but nobody ever rocked legwear quite like Bettie Page. For her iconic pinup modeling work, she often paired stockings or thigh highs with lingerie that she herself designed and made. Bettie truly was a Renaissance Woman.
