The Art of the Ad: Cutty Sark at the Millennium

Get me a dram of Cutty, serving wench, and make sure ‘tis a generous pour!

From roughly 1999–2001ish or so, I spent an inordinate amount of time drooling over Cutty Sark’s print ads. At the time, these scotch whisky advertisements were omnipresent in the pages of magazines I was subscribing to, namely SPIN and Rolling Stone. So, one minute I’m reading about the or Christina Aguilera, and the next I’m stumbling upon jaw-dropping buried treasure of the hot model variety. This campaign combined two great tastes that taste great together: booze and sexy pin-up models. Is it any wonder they remain so memorable? No, it’s not. Here’s why:

I’m drunk just looking at that ad! *hiccup*

The models in these nautical-themed ads radiate modern day Vargas Girl charm. They’re sexy and sweet, stylish and sensual. Posed seductively, they beckon to us with the promise of wild nights at sea, filled with bottomless glasses of Cutty Sark and other, more flesh-based delights at the ready. What I’m trying to say here is that these ads are very successful at using sex to sell alcohol. Gold star for the advertising team, the models, the stylists, the photographers, etc. They captured the eternal appeal of retro pin-up modeling, which always pairs beautifully with alcohol.

That’s largely why these ads have been lodged in the recesses of my mind for twenty-five years now. I expect them to remain firmly ensconced there for the rest of my years, as well.
