RIP Jane Birkin

When I was growing up, all I knew of Jane Birkin could be summed up in three words: leggy, glamorous, and beautiful. She existed in my pop culture sphere as an unattainable, unspeakably gorgeous human being who was a photographer’s dream subject. Later, I learned she was a model, a singer, an actress, lent her name to a prestigious handbag (prestigious because of her name association), a bon vivant from London who lived most of her adult life in France—basically, she was a little bit of everything, and 100% fabulous, always.

Jane Birkin has passed away at age 76 after an illness. May she rest in peace. Here’s a lovely set of portraits taken by photographer Jean-Claude Deutschthat at Birkin’s home in Paris on December 15, 1971.

  1. I remember Jane Birkin mainly from Brigitte Bardot’s final acting role Don Juan: Or if Don Juan were a Woman where Bardot seduces her instead of character husband Robert Hossein. I also saw her in the Hercule Poirot film Evil Under the Sun where she played one of the suspects. I was more familiar with her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg actually. RIP to her.

  2. I too am sad about the death of Jane Birkin as well 😦 Did you ever see her in director/musician Serge Gainsbourg’s 1976 masterpiece of outsider art entitled Je’taime moi non plus? Great film, it co-stars underground icon Joe Dallesandro 🙂
