Brian De Palma turned 86 years old on September 11. As I’ve mentioned many times over the years, he’s one of my absolute favorite filmmmakers. Serendipitously, he once made a movie with my two favorite actors. That movie, Scarface (1983), features Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino in contrasting performances that, together, positively crackle with electricity. As the Ice Queen Elvira Hancock, Michelle is all smooth, sexy edges and stylish, jaded cool, while Al as Tony Montana is pure manic, coke-fueled energy, threatening to explode at any moment. Which one would I rather lounge with poolside? No contest, it’s Elvira all day every day.

I mean, am I right or am I right?

Pour me a J&B, please.

The view from the pool is magnificent, no?

Belated happy birthday to Mr. De Palma. As always, I thank you, sir, for hiring Michelle for the role that really launched her career into the stratosphere.
