Late last year, I was formulating a series of posts on the Hollywood archetype known as “The Bombshell.” Well, those posts haven’t come to published fruition yet. While we wait for them to (hopefully) appear at some point, let’s get a teaser taste (of cheesecake?) by turning this Random Image post over to Bombshells.

The Online Etymology Dictionary defines this usage of the word “bombshell” as describing a woman of “startling vitality or physique.” I’m a fan of classic Hollywood cinema, and for all of its seemingly outdated meaning today, the Bombshell was an integral and unavoidable aspect of movies and popular culture, from roughly the 1930s through the 1960s. I’m also curious about how the women defined by the term used it to their benefit—or, conversely, how they were completely subsumed by it.

So where am I with those Bombshells posts, you ask? Well, a few are drafted, one is ready to go, but I haven’t had the time or energy to devote to it, between all the other posts and my writing outside of this little ol’ blog. I figured, then, why not just throw together a bunch of the glamorous stars I intended to profile (someday!) in a Random Image post, slap the word “Bombshells” on it, then hit publish? Well, that’s exactly what I’ve done.
Enjoy, but be warned: these images are extremely flammable.

I’d say Hedy (my favorite in this group) belongs in the siren category instead of being a bombshell.
