Rapture: Debbie Harry, Live and on Fire

I’ve done some research but I’m having difficulty pinpointing the exact date, location, or photographer for these stunning stage shots of Debbie Harry. I believe they’re all from the same Blondie show in 1978, but which show that is I’m not sure. 1978 was a big year for the band as their third album, Parallel Lines, helped elevate them from a cult favorite to one of the most popular rock bands around. Even without the historical significance of ‘78 for Blondie, these would still be absolutely primo pics of the hottest rock singer to ever grace a stage.

Debbie Harry brought that Marilyn Monroe (bottled) blonde bombshell quality to 1970s punk rock, and her clever and playful songwriting and performance style helped usher in a new wave of rock music. To quote a Kings of Leon song, Debbie was pure sex on fire—on record, but especially onstage, where she typically performed in all manner of outfits that allowed for maximum gawking by the audience. Not to diminish her talents, but her eye candy sex appeal was an integral part of her persona. I’m saying “was” but in truth it still is—she’s 78 now and still rockin’ it harder than most performers fifty years her junior. She’s always owned her sexuality, which makes her even her sexier.

So, enjoy these jaw-dropping shots of Debbie Harry onstage circa 1978, wearing high heels and the tightest, tiniest yellow dress that leaves little to the imagination. Those lucky bastards in the front row certainly got their money’s worth that night.

  1. Great post 🙂 Interestingly enough, Deborah Harry was a huge fan of Marilyn Monroe growing up 🙂 One legend praising another 🙂 You have probably seen Videodrome and Hairspray by now, but remember her roles in those two films? 🙂 I do of course 🙂

Speaking of Marilyn, I just posted a blog entry regarding my top 100 favorite films of all-time and you will absolutely love what I placed at number 18 🙂

    1. Excellent list, John! You are right, I definitely love #18 on your list, among many others. And I also love those two Debbie Harry films. Recently I watched her in an interesting TV movie called Intimate Stranger. It was from 1991 and was in the erotic thriller genre.

      1. Why, thank you for the kind words Michael 🙂 I also want to praise the wonderful you do on this site of yours 🙂 I do remember Intimate Stranger and as an actress, Deborah Harry is always very interesting to watch. Had she been old enough during the 1940’s or 50’s, she undoubtedly would have been labeled a noir queen among many other things. Nevertheless, Deborah Happy can be extremely proud of the handful of great films she did get to shine in 🙂

P.S. I am crossing my fingers that one day, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will get the Criterion edition treatment in the future 🙂 I mean this is a film totally deserving of that 🙂 A 4K Restoration would be awesome wouldn’t it? 🙂 After all, some of director Howard Hawks other films (Bringing Up Baby and Only Angels Have Wings serves as only two examples) have already gotten the Criterion treatment 🙂
