For the tenth edition of this series, I’ve gathered together a cornucopia of vintage photographs and art to celebrate. This post is positively sizzling hot and worthy of being the tenth in a series that allows me to look at pretty pictures and (mostly) take a break from writing! In that spirit, and without further delay, here are some random images I think you’ll dig as much as I do.
Let’s begin with a shot—or, he’ll, a big old swig—of tequila to celebrate ten random image posts. Salud!Donna Summer, moaning into the most phallic microphone of all time. The BBC declared that Summer had 23 (simulated?) orgasms during the epic, 17-minute track, “Love To Love You Baby.”Just your average 1980s-1990s bikini contest. I especially love the juxtaposition of voluminously coiffed contestants and haphazardly scrawled graffiti. Masters of horror Stephen King and George Romero posing in front of a Creepshow billboard on the Sunset Strip, 1982. Actress and model Barbara Leigh played Vampirella on a series of comic book covers and at conventions in the 1970s. She was cast in a Vampirella movie from Hammer Film that never got made. Bummer. You knew I had to slip in a Michelle Pfeiffer photo someplace, didn’t you?Your grandparents were once young and carefree, kids. Batgirl herself, the outrageously hot Yvonne Craig. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Grace Jones hamming it up on the set of Conan the Destroyer, which played constantly on HBO in the ‘80s, and you betcha I watched it every chance I got.A passionate embrace on a bucolic college campus. Art by legendary pulp master Paul Rader. Phasers set to stun: Italian actress Leonora Ruffo in the 1966 sci-fi movie 2+5: Missione Hydra, known as Star Pilot in English. Keith Haring at work. Based on the poster for The Mean Season, probably in 1985.International one-sheet for the criminally underrated The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984), retitled Village Dreams outside the United States. More Yvonne Craig, because she was everything. This time she’s thawing the polar ice caps all by herself. Marilyn being absolutely ravishing. Charlie’s Angels: my happy place. Cheeky superhero art by Kerry Callen. It’s all fun and games until someone gets big welts on their thighs. Office life in the 1960s. Firework: Katy Perry, 2011. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, bad as they wanna be, in White Men Can’t Jump, 1992. Director Joe Dante directs Dee Wallace during the bravura opening sequence in The Howling (1981), one of my favorite movies of all time. Soho Fair spaghetti eating contest, 1958.This is why your parents called it “devil music.”
All of these pictures are wonderful Michael 🙂 I really can’t pick a favorite since I love them all, but I love it that you included a picture of Marilyn Monroe on here, who I am a huge fan of 🙂 Speaking of which, I just did a Happy Birthday blog entry recently on her 🙂 Click the link below If you are interested 🙂
Thanks for the link, John! I’ll definitely check it out. I too am a huge Marilyn fan. You’ll find some other posts about her on my site if you search for her. I have plans to write more about her here too! I just completely adore her.
